The coastguardsman closed the lock on the fence that surrounded the old lighthouse and walked away.
No longer necessary to naval aid and too expensive to maintain, the lighthouse was added to the list of those that would be left to the elements, doomed to deterioration and forgotten by progress.
Once stately, respected and valuable for their contribution to others, these vestiges of history have been deserted all over the world. From California to Maine, Puerto Rico to Italy, these buildings have lost their place in this century. Some mourn their loss while others accept it as inevitable.
Abandoned. Forgotten. Left alone to ruin.
Do we think of people the same way? Do we consider some unnecessary inconveniences, not worth the trouble to help? Do we turn our backs, walk away and shake our heads, giving up?
Perhaps you’ve given up on someone. Perhaps others have given up on you.
But thank God, He doesn’t abandon us. God believes it’s never too late for us, that none of us are beyond repair, and that each of us still have value.
“God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5b
I’d love to see those abandoned lighthouses. I love old buildings.
And thanks for the reminder not to give up on anyone. I keep reminding myself that as long as he’s living, God will always pursue one of my family members. As long as we’re living, there’s always hope.
Thanks, Vonda. “Lighthouse Digest” runs a “Doomsday List” of lighthouses that are endangered, some of which might become abandoned, if you’d like to see if any are near you.
